Dr Carrie Heitmeyer awarded MBE for Services to Social Science

Dr Carrie Heitmeyer has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026, for Services to Social Science.

ACCESS would like to extend our congratulations to Dr Carrie Heitmeyer who has been awarded an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026, for Services to Social Science. 

Carrie is Head of Social Science at the Government Office for Science, and a member of ACCESS’s Policy and Practice Working Group and Adaptation and Resilience Task Force.

She is also a Visiting Fellow in the Anthropology Department at the London School of Economics and  a Visiting Professor of Research Impact at the Leeds University Business School. Carrie previously served as a Senior Science Adviser for the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) during the Covid-19 response, focusing on social and behavioural science. 

Carrie said:I’m thrilled to have been recognised in the Birthday Honours, and particularly pleased that there is increasing recognition of the value of social science in government, across departments and agencies. It’s been a collective effort, and I’m constantly inspired by the dedication of social scientists within government and academia.”

The award of Member of the Order of the British Empire is awarded for an outstanding achievement or service to the community, which has had a long-term, significant impact and stands out as an example to others.

Carrie’s MBE for Services to Social Science demonstrates her commitment to ensuring that social science evidence informs policy as much as possible.
