About the organisation(s) I've worked for
Organisation name:
Anglia Ruskin UniversityAbout my experience and expertise
Personal statement:
I have been Professor of Social Sustainability at the Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) since August 2022. I draw primarily on social science approaches (psychology, science & technology studies, psychosocial studies, human geography), but also have technical training in applied mathematics.
I am co-lead of the €3m European Centre for Social Sciences & Humanities in Climate, Energy and Mobility research – SSH CENTRE (https://sshcentre.eu/), as well as the €5m SHARED GREEN DEAL project (https://sharedgreendeal.eu/) which aims to bring social innovation tools to frontline organisations helping to achieve Europe’s climate policies. I have previously co-led the SHAPE ENERGY platform and Energy-SHIFTS innovation forum, which were close collaborations with the European Commission’s energy strategy unit within DG RTD.
Key topic areas of research or interest:
I research how sustainable lifestyles – the ways we consume energy, food, goods, and travel – fit within society. My work explores both personal journeys of change towards lower consumption, and policy interventions to facilitate societal-level change. Much of my work explores how different communities (including different academic disciplines) can work effectively together to achieve sustainability ambitions. I also have a developing stream of research around climate emotions and mental health, which I discuss on my website www.begreenchange.com.
Collaboration opportunities:
I have extensive media experience, including appearing on the BBC News Channel to talk about ways to reduce our carbon footprint, contributing to a week-long feature on home energy savings for the Victoria Derbyshire programme on BBC2, and national and international radio experience (e.g. BBC Cambridgeshire, BBC Essex, BBC Hereford & Worcestershire, Deutschlandfunk). I am happy to be contacted for media pieces.
