Personal statement:

As an energy geographer, my research engages the theme of society, sustainability, and energy. I am particularly interested in the social, environmental, and economic challenges of energy transitions; contested ideas of citizenship relating to energy; the geographies of energy, climate justice and the polycrisis; and issues of agency & identity.

I am a principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous high impact national and internationally funded research projects, working on topics ranging from energy poverty to climate justice, and citizen participation to issues of power.

Key topic areas of research or interest:

Energy Geographies, Transitions Research, Citizenship, Engagement

Collaboration opportunities:

Open to collaboration opportunities, including commission, consultancy, and media work.

Other projects and networks:

CLIMATUDE (EPA: 2025-28), involves undertaking a programme of engaged research with Irish citizens to co-create a better understanding of Irish people’s attitudes, beliefs and values relating to climate change and how these impact the actioning of effective climate change mitigation and adaptation projects in Ireland.

ACCEPT (2021-24) developed a digital toolbox, that allows energy communities to offer innovative digital services to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, save energy in the users’, ideally increasing the comfort in their homes through smart devices. UCC led a package of work focused on designed and implementation of citizen-consumer engagement, including planning & realisation of living labs. https://doi.org/10.3030/957781

EUB SuperHub (2021-24) supported the evolvement of the certification process in the EU by development of a scalable methodology to view, assess and monitor the buildings through their lifecycle. Within this project, UCC led a work package on stakeholder involvement and social acceptance. https://doi.org/10.3030/101033916

ENCLUDE (2021-24) aimed to operationalise the energy citizenship concept at all scales of policy-making, and in so doing, catalyse a chain reaction of decarbonization actions across the EU. In this project, UCC led a work package of engaged research characterising and conceptualising individual and collective expressions of energy citizenship. https://doi.org/10.3030/101022791

EnergyMeasures (2020-24), coordinated by UCC, worked to identify and recruit energy poor households, and provide them with low-cost energy measures and facilitated to change energy-related behaviors through an approach that takes account of the physcial nature of their housing units and is reflective of the lived experience of the household members. https://doi.org/10.3030/894759
