The English Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)<\/a> is a statistical tool that provides a measure of relative deprivation for small areas across England. It was first introduced in 2000 and most recently updated in 2019. The IMD is a valuable resource for understanding the distribution of deprivation across different regions in England, and it offers insights into the social and economic challenges faced by communities. The IMD can be used in conjunction with other datasets to explore relationships between deprivation, health outcomes, and various social and environmental factors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The IMD is based on 39 separate indicators, organised across seven domains of deprivation: Income, Employment, Education, Health, Crime, Barriers to Housing & Services, and Living Environment. These domains are combined and weighted to calculate the Index of Multiple Deprivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accessing the data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The indices rank 38,244 neighbourhoods from most deprived to least deprived. This data can be downloaded as XLSX files from this gov.uk website<\/a>. Data can be downloaded for the overarching Index of Multiple Deprivation or you can choose to include each domain or sub-domain of deprivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
