The Scottish Household Survey (SHS) is a large-scale, annual survey conducted by the Scottish Government. The survey was started in 1999 to collect information on the composition, characteristics, and behaviour of households and individuals in Scotland. Data from the survey can provides valuable insights into the social and environmental characteristics of Scottish households.

The ‘Environment’ topic may be of particular relevance to users of the Data Exchange. Questions include perceptions about climate change and environmental action, as well as frequency of visits to outdoor spaces and walking distance to nearest green and blue spaces.

Data is available based on a number of sub-groups, including: age, gender, disability, ethnicity, educational attainment, religious belonging, Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, and Urban Rural Classification. Data is presented for the entirety of Scotland, as well as by each individual council. While other topics have datasets covering longer temporal scales, the Environment topic includes data from 2013-2022.
