The Energy Consumption in the UK (ECUK) data, now provided by the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), offers comprehensive insights into the country’s energy consumption patterns over time. The dataset includes multiple sectors and various energy sources. By exploring energy consumption trends over time, this dataset allows users to identify shifts in usage patterns, advancements in energy efficiency, and the impact of policy measures.
Accessing the data
You can download data on:
- Electrical Products: number of domestic and non-domestic appliances (e.g. refrigerator, washing machine, TV, microwave, etc.), along with electricity consumption by these appliances
- End Use: how energy is being used (e.g. space heating, water, cooking etc.), including fuel type used
- Primary Energy Consumption: how much energy is being consumed, by fuel and sector
- Energy Intensity: energy intensities by sector
- Consumption: organised by subsector and fuel
The datasets can be accessed on this data.gov.uk webpage. Raw data tables include data from 1970 to the current release. Each spreadsheet includes a ‘Contents’ sheet which outlines the different datasets included in the spreadsheet. Select the sheet which is of relevance to your research. Most of the datasets also include a ‘Methodology and quality’ sheet which describes how the data was obtained, including data sources and definitions.
You can also explore and download data using the interactive dashboard, however this doesn’t include data beyond 2018.

Publications
You can view publications for each round of data by clicking ‘Show more’ underneath the links to the data. PDF files can be downloaded summarising the year’s data (e.g. Energy Consumption in the UK (ECUK) 1970 to 2022).
