About my experience and expertise

Personal statement:

I have a background in education and community arts as a schoolteacher and theatre facilitator. Since 2014 I have used creative, arts-based methods to research youth and community participation in disaster resilience building. I’ve been involved in projects across the UK, Europe, Asia and Africa that have researched the experiences of disaster-affected communities and promoted youth voice and action on issues including flooding, coastal change, nuclear disaster and the climate crisis. Through this work I have collaborated with emergency planners, scientists, health practitioners, NGOs and schools. I also run environmental education projects at Global Link Development Education Centre in Lancaster.

Key topic areas of research or interest:

  • Youth voice and action in disaster management
  • Social effects of disaster
  • Place-based, participatory action research
  • Arts for social change
